NJAFM's 7th Annual Conference:   “Embracing Sustainability”

The Palace at Somerset Park
Somerset, NJ
Throughout New Jersey, numerous government and public agencies have implemented policies and programs to highlight the importance of “Embracing Sustainability” to preserve resources, mitigate adverse impacts of natural hazards, and create safe communities. Moving into the next decade, this focus on sustainability will continue to influence regulations and policies at the Federal, State and Local level, and will shape development patterns along our waterways and floodplains for years to come. Since flooding is New Jersey's #1 natural disaster concern, it is imperative that we adopt sustainability concepts in managing our water resources, wetlands and floodplains. The NewJersey Association for Floodplain Management (NJAFM) was        established to promote sound floodplain management and to ensure productive dialog between private citizens and public officials to mitigate flood hazards and minimize flood risk to people and property throughout New Jersey.

The NJAFM 7th Annual Conference, cosponsored this year by the NJ Section of the American Water Resources Association (AWRA), provides a unique opportunity to further this mission and to facilitate integration of sustainability concepts into floodplain management. The conference includes plenary sessions, concurrent technical presentations, expanded exhibitors, and networking opportunities. Continuing Education Credits (CECs) will be offered for Municipal Construction and Code Officials, Professional Engineers, Professional Planners, Professional Land Surveyors, Certified Public Works Managers, and Certified Floodplain Managers. Opportunities for exhibitors and sponsors available.  For more information, contact Craig Wenger, NJAFM Secretary at 609-807-9674. To register or to access conference information and exhibitor/sponsorship information, go to: http://njafm.wildapricot.org

Rutgers: Soils & Site Evaluation For Septic Disposal Systems & Stormwater BMP's
9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
New Brunswick, NJ
Thousands of septic systems and stormwater basins malfunction for the same reason: failure to understand how water moves (or doesn’t move!) through soil. You cannot hope to design and build these structures without a down-and-dirty understanding of these soils. That’s what this hands-on course is all about.
Every day, you will spend equal time moving between lectures in the classroom to soil pits in the field, evaluating soils using your eyes, hands, and nose. You will observe, record and evaluate the site-specific soil characteristics required to write and support a complete soil log, as well as evaluate the soil and landscape data to determine design input. Most importantly, you will develop the necessary tools to determine whether a site is right – legally and practically -- for a septic system or stormwater runoff Best Management Practices (BMPs) facility. Be prepared to leave with mud on your boots! Information and Registration
