Please join GSWA's Dir. of Outreach and Education and Land Steward Hazel England for a late spring workday at our 53-acre Conservation Management Area (CMA) in Harding, NJ. GSWA relies on the support and work of volunteers as we maintain and restore this important open space to become a functional floodplain forest again.  Work on June 16 will likely focus on creating a seating and picnic area at the entrance to the property, removing invasive species invading the property, and replanting with native shrubs and perennials within our 28-acre deer exclosure. The American Littoral Society will host a presentation and book signing featuring noted underwater photographer and resident of Brick, NJ, Herb Segars, who will introduce his new book, Beneath the Garden State – Exploring Aquatic New Jersey. It is Segars' first book, although his work has appeared in GeoBBC WildlifeNational GeographicNational Geographic WorldNatural History, National Wildlife, Newsweek, Ranger Rick, Smithsonian, The World and I, Outdoor America and many other national and international publications.Segars will share images of the many strange and beautiful creatures and habitats found in New Jersey waters including the one-half-inch long naked sea butterfly or the fascinating blue shark, sandbar shark and sand tiger shark. Images also include a goosefish (monkfish) devouring a black sea bass or see a sea star growing new arms. All will be peppered with the author's personal accounts from his thirty years of scuba diving and photographing in New Jersey. The program and the book will appeal to fishermen, scuba divers, surfers, beach lovers, environmentalists and just about anyone who loves the ocean.After the presentation, the author will sign copies of his book, which can be purchased at the event for $29.99 with cash, credit card, or check.

Hydric Soils- The Field Indicators and More

The course is an introduction to describing hydric soils and the use and meaning of the regional field indicators for hydric soils. The course is designed for the licensed profession (engineer, surveyor, geologist), soil scientist, and wetland scientist. This class will teach you how to effectively describe soils, interpret soil reports, and who use the Hydric Soil Indicators in the Regional Supplements to the Corps of Engineers Wetland Delineation Manual. You will learn the basic processes that take place in saturated soil and how to “read the story” in a soil profile. The training includes a field introduction to identifying layers, distinguishing concentrations and depletions, and preparing hydric soil descriptions from soil profiles. Each student will have a chance to describe and interpret a series of soils profiles and hydrological systems.. Certified Water Sampler Program

Cost: $175 per person. Reservations required. 
Due to events like the shale natural gas drilling, new water well development and overall water quality awareness; the need for certified water sample collectors is growing by leaps and bounds to help keep up with the demand for compliant and regulatory water testing. National Testing Laboratories in conjunction with Wilkes University and B.F. Environmental is offering a Certified Sampler Program to individuals interested in learning about proper sample collection techniques and chain of custody. There will be approximately 4 hours of classroom instruction as well as hands on field instruction. Seating is limited and reservations will be taken on a first come-first serve basis. Reservations must be made by no later than June 29th or until capacity is reached. For reservations or if you have questions about this class, please contact Marianne Metzger at 800-458-3330 x223 or email at mmetzger@ntllabs.com. At the successful completion of this program, you will receive WQA continuing education credits; a Certificate of Completion from Wilkes University and a Certification of Completion from B.F. Environmental on Proper Chain of Custody. The Certified Sampler Program was developed to address specific collection issues and testing requirements associated with New York, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia and Texas. We are also gathering additional testing information necessary for testing in Wyoming and Colorado as well. Certified sample collectors are required for any type of water sampling that needs to be collected for regulatory/compliance testing or testing that may have litigation implications.

Introduction to Soil Science and Soil Morphology for Engineers, PA Sewage Enforcement Officers, Geologists, and other Professionals. The course will provide an introduction into the environmental applications of soil science and soil morphology. During the presentation portion of the course, we will discuss the properties and characteristics of a soil, soil formation/ transformation, and soil hydrology.
