A River Again–Talk and Book Signing
7 – 8:30 pm
Briar Bush Nature Center
1212 Edge Hill Road
Abington, PA 19001
In a short time, the Schuylkill River went from being considered waters of "uncommon purity" to being the country's dirtiest river. That distinction resulted in the Schuylkill becoming the focus of a precedent-setting river cleanup effort from 1947 to 1951. Still, the river has a bad reputation today, but the complete story about the health of the river and what it means to the communities through which it flows is more complicated. Chari Towne, Schuylkill Watershed Specialist with the Delaware Riverkeeper Network, will lead a conversation on the environmental history of the Schuylkill and how themes from the past affect us in the present. This discussion will draw from Ms. Towne’s recently published book A River Again, the Story of the Schuylkill River Project, which can be found online as a PDF. A limited number of hardcover books will be available for $21.95. There is no charge for Old York Road Historical Society and Briar Bush members; all others, $3. Contact the Briar Bush Nature Center with questions. 215-887-6603. Copies of A River Again can also be purchased directly from the book section of the Delaware Riverkeeper Network's River Shop.

Eastern Regional Meeting - Society for Petroleum Engineers of PA
Pittsburgh, Pa
Over the past 5 years since the last ERM was held in Pittsburgh the basin has grown considerably to accommodate the explosion of the Marcellus shale and more recently, its older brother, the Utica shale. The result of this is the rich legacy of experience that was already present in the basin is now armed with access to and the application for the latest technology for oil and gas field development. This has shifted our basin from being a mere ‘user’ of technology to being a true ‘developer’ of technology. We have also seen the industry embrace the added environmental challenges of the area and work through solutions that benefit the communities in which we operate. The theme of the 2013 Eastern Regional Meeting is appropriately named “Bridging Experience with Technology” and Pittsburgh will be the perfect venue to share these realized successes to others in the basin and to showcase them to those operating in similar unconventional basins outside of the area. More information
