Workshop: Living with Tress in New Jersey Communities
7:30-9:30 p.m.
Montclair Fire Dept. Headquarters

1 Pine St., Montclair, NJ.

Trees enhance our communities in countless environmental and aesthetic ways. They provide critical habitat, reduce runoff and erosion, moderate summer heat, improve air quality, and increase quality of life and property values. However, they also have the potential to cause damage and disruption when they fall on roads, buildings and power lines. Society’s desire to retain trees comes into conflict with other desires, such as having a dependable power supply. To coexist with trees in New Jersey’s suburban and urban landscapes, we must walk a fine line -- encouraging tree planting but also being smart about what we plant and where.
Municipalities, rightly concerned about loss of tree canopy, do their best to prevent unnecessary removals and sustain the community forest while protecting public health and safety. They do this by adopting tree protection ordinances, by developing and carrying out tree management plans, and by educating residents about what trees to plant and what trees to avoid.
At this workshop, a vegetation manager from PSE&G will talk about the utility’s policies and practices related to tree pruning and planting, and how it manages vegetation in transmission corridors; the law, the values that guide utility policies, and how they mesh with ecological principles. Also, representatives from two environmental commissions will tell the stories of their involvement in local tree initiatives, including a successful replanting program following Hurricane Sandy and a municipal tree protection ordinance adopted after years of debate and revisions. Registration fees:  $10 -ANJEC Members, $15 -Non-members, FREE -ANJEC Workshop Plan Participants. For information/registrationr, email ANJEC, or call (973) 539-7547.
